What are backup codes?

Ten single-use codes that let you sign in if every device with a passkey is unavailable.

Quick Steps

  1. 1 Generate from Security (Passkeys) -> Backup codes.
  2. 2 You will see the 10 codes ONCE. Save them immediately.
  3. 3 Print the page, or paste them into a password manager.
  4. 4 Each code works exactly once.
  5. 5 When low, click Regenerate to get a fresh batch (invalidates the old batch).

Backup codes are a safety net. If you lose every device with a passkey enrolled, a backup code can still get you in. Bizity generates ten at a time and stores only bcrypt hashes -- you see the plaintext exactly once, at generation, and must save them yourself.

Best practices:

  • Print the page and store the printout somewhere safe (home safe, file drawer).
  • Paste into a password manager (1Password, Bitwarden) under a secure note.
  • Do not email them to yourself -- email gets compromised, defeating the purpose.
  • When you run low, regenerate a fresh batch. The old batch is invalidated automatically.

To use a backup code at sign-in: during the passkey challenge, click Use a backup code instead and type the code. It will sign you in and mark that specific code as used.
